IEEE 802.1 Internetwork The main focus of the specification is LANs with optimization in bridging and
switching. It defines the relationship between 802 standards and other reference models in
telecommunications. The IEEE 802.1P and 802.1Q standards define how Ethernet switches can
classify traffic in order to expedite delivery of time-critical transmissions. By using 3 bits for
precedence, IP has the same eight levels of prioritization, 0 through 7, as 802.1P, 802.1Q and
most of the other LAN standards. By implementing a cross-mapping service, it becomes feasible
to provide a one-to-one mapping between 802.1Q Ethernet frames and the IP precedence, letting
you build a network that carries prioritization from one Ethernet LAN to another across an IP-
based WAN or ISP connection.
IEEE 802.1P: prioritize network traffic at the MAC sublayer of the OSI data link layer by adding
priority messages to packet frame headers.
IEEE 802.1Q: implement in VLANS: prioritizes network traffic by appending a tag to a MAC frame.
This VLAN tag carries VLAN data into two parts: the 12 bit VLAN ID and the 3-bit
priortization field.
