Additional Information
Purpose
This position in the Scalable Visualization and Technologies group at the Texas Advanced Computing Center
(TACC) will play a key role in designing, implementing and managing local and remote visualization applications
and algorithms for TACC and the scientific supercomputing community.
Essential Functions
Developing visualization applications for the petroleum industry in conjunction with both TACC and partner
personnel; Working onsite with partner team members to characterize and refine application features to meet
partner requirements (May require travel to Houston); Collaborate with TACC and partner team members to
expand and enhance application capabilities; Work well independently and as part of a collaborative team;
Communicate effectively with colleagues and collaborators.
Marginal/Incidental functions
Other related functions as assigned.
Required qualifications
Ph.D. degree with major coursework in the field of assignment (Computer Sciences, Information Technology,
Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and two years of related experience or
master's degree and four years of related experience, or bachelor's degree and six years of related experience;
Demonstrated experience in developing and using applications for the petroleum industry, including familiarity
with common algorithms and software packages; Experience designing, developing and maintaining software;
Thorough knowledge of software design best practices including usability and maintenance issues;
Self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, to organize work, set priorities and
determine objectives and strategies to achieve them; Excellent communication skills and an interest in working in
a collaborative team environment. Thorough knowledge of and experience with Office productivity tools including
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Experience with Windows, Mac OS, Unix/Linux. Equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Six years of experience designing, developing and maintaining software, including lead responsibility for projects;
Three years of experience designing, developing and maintaining visualization or graphics software; Knowledge
of common development and scripting languages such as C/C++, Java, Python, Ruby, etc; software repository
tools such as Git, SVN; project management tools such as Redmine, Jira, Trac.
Working conditions
May work around standard office conditions Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (
TRS
), subject to the position being at least 20
hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
