SQL Queries for Mere Mortals, Second Edition
============================================
--------------------
Sample Files Read Me
--------------------
You can find sample files containing data and the queries mentioned
in each chapter for the five sample databases:
- Bowling League
- Entertainment Agency
- Recipes
- Sales Orders
- School Scheduling
---------------------------
Installing the Sample Files
---------------------------
WINDOWS XP AND VISTA
--------------------
To install the sample files on a Microsoft Windows system (Microsoft Windows
XP SP2 or later recommended), execute the SQLQFMM2.exe file that you can find
in the root folder of this CD. You need 95 MB of free space to install the
sample files.
The sample files are provided in the following formats:
1) Microsoft Access 2000 (.mdb) - subfolder MSAccess
2) Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (.mdf, .ldf) - subfolder MSSQLServer
3) MySQL Version 5.0 (.ibd, .frm) - subfolder MySQL
4) SQL script text files - subfolder SQLScripts
MAC OS X
--------
To install the MySQL files on Mac OS X, follow these steps:
1) Insert the CD; the CD should show up in the Finder
2) To copy the files onto your Mac, drag the folder SQLQFMM2 to
your Documents folder. This folder contains the following
subfolders:
- MySQL: This folder contains sample databases, data, and
query files for use with MySQL version 5.0 or later.
- SQLScripts: This folder contains generic text SQL scripts
(.sql) that you can modify for use with any other system
that supports SQL.
3) Unmount the disk image in the Finder by first selecting it,
then choose File > Eject from the menubar.
====================================================
Note:
Only the MySQL and SQLScripts folders are in the
Mac partition of the CD. Mac users wont find the
Access or SQL Server folders as listed below because
Access and SQL Server are not native to Mac OS X.
If, however, you are running Windows XP/Vista under
Boot Camp or with Parallels, you can access those
files when running Windows on your Intel Mac.

-----------------
Files and Folders
-----------------
The folders and files on the CD are as follows:
FOLDERS
-------
MSAccess - MDB and ADP files for Microsoft Access (Microsoft Windows)
MSSQLServer - MDF and LDF files for Microsoft SQL Server (Microsoft Windows)
BAT files to attach, detach, and shrink each of the
sample databases
MySQL - SQL scripts for MySQL to define each database,
load the data, and define the queries (Microsoft Windows Or Mac OSX)
MySQL\Data - The sample databases in MySQL format. You can change
your Data Directory in MySQL Administrator to point to
this location to run the databases without having to
execute the scripts.
SQLScripts - Generic scripts to define each database, load the data,
and define the queries. You can modify these scripts
to work with your database system.

MSSQLServer FILES
-----------------
You can find four types of files in this folder:
1) Batch files (.bat) - Execute these files to attach, detach, or shrink SQL
Server databases. The file names tell you the purpose of each file. For example,
AttachBowling.bat attaches the Bowling League sample database, DetachEntertainment.bat
detaches the Entertainment Agency sample database, and ShrinkRecipes.bat shrinks
or compresses the Recipes sample database. Note that each file executes a companion
SQL script file, and the command you'll find in each file assumes the script can
be found at C:\AddisonWesley\SQLQFMM2\MSSQLServer. If you have installed the sample
files in a different location, you will have to edit the batch files to point to
the new location.
2) SQL Script files (.sql) - These files contain the SQL commands to attach,
detach, or shrink one of the sample databases. The file names tell you the purpose
of each file. For example, AttachSalesOrdersModify.sql contains the command to
attach the modify version of the Sales Orders sample database, DetachRecipes.sql
contains the command to detach the Recipes sample database, and ShrinkBowling.sql
contains the command to shrink (compress) the Bowling League sample database. Note
that the commands in the Attach files assume that the SQL Server database files
can be found at C:\AddisonWesley\SQLQFMM2\MSSQLServer. If you have installed the
sample files in a different location, you will have to edit the Attach script files
to point to the new location. You can execute these commands by running the
associated Batch file or by loading the script into the SQL Server query processor
and executing it.
3) SQL Server Data files (.mdf) - These files contain the tables, views, and stored
proceures for each of the sampl
