Summary
Integer Representation (1)
Unsigned Representation
Implies that the representation does not have
a separate bit to represent the sign bit of the
number.
Note that numbers can be either positive or
negative in some unsigned representation.
Unsigned Integer
Unsigned Non-Negative Representation
Unsigned Two’s Complement Representation
Integer Representation (2)
Unsigned Non-Negative Representation
Treats every number as either zero or a
positive value.
This representation can only represent non-
negative numbers.
A n-bit number can have a value ranging from
0 to 2
n
-1.
Example: An 8-bit word could be used to
represent the numbers from 0 to 255
10000000 = 128
11111111 = 255
Integer Representation (3)
Unsigned Two’s Complement
Representation
This representation can represent both
positive and negative numbers.
A positive number (or zero) is represented
exactly the same as in non-negative
representation.
A negative number is represented as the
bitwise complement of its absolute value +1.
