Architecture of IEEE 802.11 NETWORK
•Station (STA)
Terminal with access mechanisms to the wireless medium
•Basic Service Set (BSS)
In BSS, number o wireless stations are associated to an AP(Access
Point). All communications take place through the AP.
•Distribution System(DS)
Interconnection network to form one logical network (ESS: Extended
Service Set) based on several BSS.
Not specified in 802.11 standard!
•Extended Service Set(ESS)
An extended network formed by several BSS via a DS
•Independent Basic Service Set(IBSS)
A wireless ad-hoc network in absence of any network infrastructure.
STAs can communicate directly to each other, providing that they are
within each other’s transmission range.
