Illustrated WPF
Dear Reader,
Although WPF has a reputation of having a steep learning curve, that needn’t be
the case if you learn the basic WPF paradigms from the start. Illustrated WPF uses
a succinct and visual format, consisting of figures; short, focused code samples;
and clear, concise explanations to explain those paradigms and processes.
Figures are of prime importance in this text. When I was teaching program-
ming seminars, I found that students could grasp the concepts and details much
more quickly when I illustrated them with figures on the whiteboard. I’ve used
the same technique in this text, distilling each important concept into simple but
accurate illustrations. The visual presentation gives you a deep understanding of
WPF much more quickly than is possible with plain text.
However, a programming framework such as WPF is clearly much too intri-
cate to be described solely with illustrations; there must be text as well. So, rather
than giving long, wordy explanations, I’ve used short, concise descriptions and
bulleted lists to make important pieces of information visually distinct. Finally,
I’ve tried to illustrate each concept with a small working program that’s simple to
understand and that you can easily type in on your computer.
The result of these techniques is that by the end of this book you’ll have a thor-
ough working knowledge of WPF programming and will understand its structure.
All this means you’ll be able to build your own visually stunning programs with
unprecedented ease.
If you want a long, leisurely, verbose explanation of WPF, this isn’t the book for
you. If, however, you want a concise, thorough, visual presentation of WPF, this
might be just what you’re looking for.
Take care,
Dan Solis
