<purpose>This shapefile is intended to be used as one of the criteria for finding suitable habitat locations for the Californian Gnatcatcher. The bird is most likely to nest in areas where the slope of the terrain is less than 40%.</purpose>
<supplinf>The original elevation data used to create slopelt40.shp was downloaded from USGS. A slope map was derived from the elevation data, then slopes less than 40% were extracted using the Spatial Analyst Raster Calculator. The following expression was entered: [slope] < 40. The result was reclassified, giving NoData to all areas with a value of 0 (not less than 40% in slope) and 1 to all areas with a value of 1 (less than 40% in slope). The result was converted to a shapefile and then clipped to the study area. The result shows all locations in the San Diego county 7.5 minute quads of La Mesa, La Jolla, Del Mar and Poway where the slope of the terrrain is less than 40%.</supplinf>
