Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool Installation Instructions and User Guide
The Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool is a MIKE by DHI Custom User Tool
developed for the purpose of faciltiating the use of shape files as
boundary lines in the Mesh Generator. The tool is capable of reading
the geometric information from a point, polyline or polygon shape file
and then generating an XYZ file in the format required by the Mesh
Generator.
This is a very simple tool with few options, so this document serves as
both the Installation Instructions and User Guide.
Installation Instructions
-------------------------
All of the files required to run the Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool are
included in the file Shape2XYZ.zip. These files include:

DHI.ShapetoXYZ.exe
DotSpatial.Data.dll
DotSpatial.Projections.dll
DotSpatial.Serialization.dll
DotSpatial.Topology.dll
To install the Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool simply unpack all of these
files to the folder where the tool will reside on your computer. This
folder can have any name and be located anywhere on your computer, but
for the sake of consistency its probably a good practice to save it to
the following folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\DHI\UserTools\ShapetoXYZ
Once all of the files are saved to the same folder on your computer, the
tool is ready to use by simply initiating the file
DHI.ShapetoXYZ.exe
User Guide
----------
The Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool is a very simple and straight-forward
tool with very few options, so the operation of the tool is very easy.
There are essentially three steps for running the tool:
Step 1: Selecting the shape file to be converted
When the Shape To XYZ Conversion Tool is executed it will prompt for name
and location of the shape file that is being converted. The shape file
can be either a point, polyline or polygon shape file. Once the file is
selected click the [Open] to load it to the tool.
Step 2: Defining the Minimum Distance between points
Once the shape file is loaded you will be prompted to define the Minimum
Distance Between Points. Depending on the type and size of the shapes
being converted, it may be desirable to have a minimum spacing between
vertices of the lines describing each shape. These vertices will be used
by the Mesh Generator to define the size of the mesh elements that are
generated.
Enter a value to define the Minimum Distance, or leave the field empty to
simply use the points defined in the Shape file, then click the [OK]
button to continue.
Step 3: Defining the XYZ file name and location
The last step in the conversion is to define the name and location of the
XYZ file that is generated. Once this is completed, click the [Save] button
to execute the conversion.
If the shape file contains elevation information in the Z field it will also
be converted to the XYZ file and will be available for use in the Mesh Generator.
