ten Richtlinie VDI 2230 Blatt 2 (Mehrschraubenver-
bindungen) angepasst.
Wesentliche Inhalte der Aktualisierung (Ausgabe
2014-12) betreffen:
• Änderung der Berechnung des Kraftverhältnisses
bei Einschraubverbindungen (ESV)
• Aufnahme der Nachweise zur Betriebsbeanspru-
chung, wenn diese zur Überschreitung der Streck-
grenze führt bzw. bei überelastischem Anziehen,
inklusive der Nachweise zur Einhaltung der Min-
destvorspannkraft und Mindestklemmkraft
• Belastung der Schraube durch Biegung als Son-
derfall
Preliminary note
The content of this standard has been developed in
strict accordance with the requirements and recom-
mendations of the standard VDI 1000.

Introduction
This standard, which has enjoyed practical applica-
tion for over 40 years now, is a recognized and highly
regarded recommendation. Throughout the world it is
regarded as the standard work for calculating single-
bolt joints (SBJs). It provides the designer and struc-
tural engineer with a systematic method, organized
into calculation steps, for calculating bolted joints
(BJs), thereby making possible a functionally and op-
erationally reliable design which makes extensive use
of the bolt’s load-bearing capacity.
Since publication of the 2003-02 edition, more expe-
rience has been gathered and further insights gained
in the application of the standard as well as in analytic
and numerical investigations and these found voice in
a series of notes, inquiries and revision requests on
the part of users. Such information and also changes
in the international body of standards and above all
some results emerging from new research, our own
investigations and findings have induced the VDI
Committee to revise and update the standard once
more. Here it has been formally brought into line with
standard VDI 2230 Part 2 (multibolted joints) which
has now been published.
Main content of updating (edition 2014-12):
• modifications to calculation of the load factor in
the case of tapped-thread joints (TTJs)
• inclusion of working stress analyses when this re-
sults in the yield point being exceeded or in the
case of tightening beyond the elastic limit, includ-
ing verifications of compliance with the minimum
preload and minimum clamp load
• loading of the bolt by flexure as a special case
– 4 – VDI 2230 Blatt 1 / Part 1

Diese Richtlinie ist das Ergebnis einer Gemein-
schaftsarbeit des VDI-Ausschusses „Schraubenver-
bindungen“.
A12 zugrunde liegenden Werkstoffeigenschaften gel-
the length of engagement required without any
supplements.
• improved information about calculating and treat-
ing the tightening torque
• updating of information about the retaining ele-
ments (Table A14)
• Examples of calculation have been revised and
brought into line with the changes in calculation.
In addition, various changes have been made to im-
prove clarity, to correct typos and to update refer-
ences to standards.
A connecting point will generally have several BJs
(bolt array). To identify which is the most highly
loaded SBS, see VDI 2230 Part 2.
This standard is the result of collaborative work on the
part of the VDI Committee “Bolted joints”. At this
point we should like to thank all those members of the
committee who worked on the present standard in an
honorary capacity not only for their commitment but
also for the specialist knowledge and the tabular and
graphical material they made available.
This standard is the consolidated version of the
2014-12 edition.
1 Scope
The stipulations of this standard apply to steel bolts
(fastening threads with a 60° flank angle) in highly
stressed and high-strength bolted joints – in other
words, for strength grades 8.8 to 12.9 or 70 and 80 –
and with a frictional transmission of the working load
which in all cases is introduced via the clamped com-
ponents. This usually consists of a static or dynamic
axial force (that is, the direction of action is parallel
to the bolt axis). In addition, bending moments and
transverse forces may be present.
The tabular values are given for the dimension range
M4 to M39. The standard may be applied by analogy
to bolts made of other materials, in the case of lower
strength or strength differing from the strength grades
according to DIN EN ISO 898-1. The same applies to
bolts of larger dimensions.
The standard applies to a limited size of the contact
areas at the inner interfaces (dimension G, see Sec-
tion 5.1.2.2). If this limiting value is exceeded, the
specified relationships no longer apply, or a larger
calculation error occurs.
The material properties based on the Tables A1 to A4,
A6, A7, A9, A11 and A12 apply only at room tem-
