ThisbookisintendedtoprovideasystematicstudyofDMAsfromasignalprocessingperspective.Theprimaryobjectiveistodeveloparigor-ousbutyetsimpletheoryforthedesign,implementation,andperformanceanalysisofDMAs.Thetheoryincludessomesignalprocessingtechniquesforthedesignofcommonlyusedfirst-order,second-order,third-order,andalsothegeneralNth-orderDMAs.Foreachorder,particularexamplesaregivenonhowtoformstandarddirectionalpatternssuchasthedipole,car-dioid,supercardioid,hypercardioid,subcardioid,andquadrupole.ThestudydemonstratestheperformanceofthedifferentorderDMAsintermsofbeam-pattern,directivityfactor,whitenoisegain,andgainforpointsources.Theinherentrelationshipbetweendifferentialprocessingandadaptivebeamform-ingisdiscussed,whichprovidesabetterunderstandingofDMAsandwhytheycanachievehighdirectionalgain.Finally,weshowhowtodesignDMAsthatcanberobustagainstwhitenoiseamplification.
