Welcome to ArcGIS Viewer for Flex
Version 3.5
Overview
A what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) application that allows for ease and efficiency toward building web-mapping applications
based on ArcGIS API for Flex.
Ready-to-deploy GIS web client mapping application for ArcGIS Server. It is built with ArcGIS API for Flex.
Easily configurable to meet custom business needs and requirements—no programming skills required to deploy.
Viewer functionality is defined by widgets—many core widgets are included.
New functionality can be created with custom widgets developed using ArcGIS API for Flex.
There are a couple of options nondevelopers can choose from when working with the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex application. The first option is
ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Application Builder, which is a WYSIWYG application that allows easy creation and modification of ArcGIS Viewer
for Flex web applications in a GUI-driven approach. In addition to this, another option is a ready-to-deploy configurable client application,
commonly referred to throughout the help documentation as the compiled source version. Both of these options use the ArcGIS API for Flex
and both provide a solution for creating customized GIS-enabled web-mapping applications that do not require programming experience.
ArcGIS for Flex Application Builder allows for easy creation and configuration of web applications based off of ArcGIS API for Flex in a GUI-
driven WYSIWYG interface, whereas the ready-to-deploy configurable client option provides customization support via modifying
configuration (XML) files. Both options are designed to work with ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online web services. It also supports all of the
newest capabilities offered with ArcGIS 10.1 for Server.
With ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Application Builder or compiled source versions, users can quickly create and deploy a custom GIS web-
mapping application that supports data display, interactive querying, web editing, data extraction, geocoding, and printing. Functionality in
this application is based on an extensible widget programming model. Widgets are portable code blocks that provide functionality in a
modular fashion; they can be easily added to or removed as needed. More widgets are included with ArcGIS Viewer for Flex. Additional
widgets (and, therefore, new custom functionality) can be developed using ArcGIS API for Flex.
After downloading the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Application Builder or compiled source versions (see Getting Started with ArcGIS Viewer for
Flex), it is ready to be used. These ArcGIS Viewer for Flex applications enable users to easily set up, configure, and deploy a web client
mapping application that works with their own ArcGIS Server web services and/or data content from ArcGIS Online. It also supports
accessing published web maps from ArcGIS.com.
ArcGIS Viewer for Flex also enables users with developer skills to extend the core Viewer functionality by creating new widgets using
ArcGIS API for Flex. Organizations and web application designers are able to quickly and easily deploy custom business solution
applications.

Added configurable option for removing the mini-menu of layer options in the TOC - GitHub/168.
WMS legend swatches displays in the TOC - GitHub/177.
Widgets starting as minimized widgets, no longer go thru the open state on startup - GitHub/175.
Improved widget resize behavior - GitHub/153 and GitHub/182.
Improved logic for moving layers up/down in TOC and LayerList widget - GitHub/181.
The popup from the search in the HeaderController can now be modified with title and description - GitHub/179.
Improved styling for widget containers and widgets within widget containers - GitHub/193 and GitHub/195.
For the complete viewer list, see the list of closed issues in the GitHub repo.
Caution:
There is a known-limit when working with Application Builder in Windows Server 2012. An HTTP error message may display while in
the Preview tab. This will not affect the usability of the resulting web application or whether it can be deployed successfully.
Changes to be aware of when migrating from 3.4 to 3.5
If you are using OAuth based on the stand alone OAuth sample, you might want to look at taking advantage of the built-in OAuth
workflow available with the new updated IdentityManager.

System requirements
Version 3.5
ArcGIS Viewer for Flex system requirements
The following prerequisites will help you get started with the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex ("Viewer").
System requirements for hosting Viewer applications
1. A web server running on the machine where the Viewer application will be installed. Although not exclusive, some common
examples are Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) or Apache. Ask your systems administrator to verify that your
machine has a web server running.
2. Read/write access to the folder containing the Viewer application on your web server.
3. (Optional) Access to ArcGIS for Server Standard or Advanced editions if you wish to work with your own web services. The
Viewer application generally supports ArcGIS Server 9.3 or later. Some functionality, such as web editing, support time time-
aware data, server-side rendering, etc. requires later versions of ArcGIS for Server. For more information on which versions
support what functionality, see the System Requirements topic for the ArcGIS API for Flex.
Tip:
It is possible to work in Viewer without an internet connection (airplane mode). By default, some services are pre-set.
These services can be removed if not able to make a connection to them. For more information on this, please see
the FAQ, How can I work with Viewer without having internet access?
System requirements - Application Builder
The system requirements for using the application builder to create Viewer web applications are as follows:
1. Read/write access to a web server—Similar to what is described above, read/write access is needed on the folder that
Application Builder accesses. For example, the default directory for IIS is C:\\inetpub\wwwroot. By default, a directory
named flexviewers gets created in this directory, e.g. C:\\inetpub\wwwroot\flexviewers.
Tip:
If you do not have permission to create folders in your web server you may receive an error. See the Getting started
topic for additional information.
2. Adobe AIR (minimum version 3.5)—Adobe AIR enables stand-alone client applications without the constraints of a browser.
If your machine does not already have Adobe AIR installed, it will ask you to install it when you run the installation for the
application builder. You can also install it from here.
Client requirements for working with Viewer applications
A web browser with Adobe Flash Player 11.1 or higher is required to view Viewer applications. Install Flash Player from Adobe.
Note:
By default, it is assumed that the client application will have internet access. This is not required though and can be set so there is
no dependency on it. For more information, please see How can I work with Viewer without having internet access? in the FAQ
topic.
Additional resources
Internet Information Server
Internet Information Server (IIS) is from Microsoft. The installation instructions differ between different versions of IIS and Windows
operating systems. See the following Microsoft documentation for details:
Installing IIS 8 on Windows Server 2012
Installing IIS8 on Windows 8
Installing IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate
Installing IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2
Installing IIS 6.0 on Windows 2003
Installing IIS 5.1 on Windows XP
Apache HTTP Server
Apache HTTP Server from the Apache Software Foundation is an open-source Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server for
modern operating systems including UNIX, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Netware. Download and install Apache HTTP Server
or, if you have Mac OS X, just enable it on the server.
Note:
Although IIS and Apache are discussed, it should be noted that these are not the only two supported web servers for use
with Viewer applications. Any working web server should work with the Viewer application.
