Speakeasy
Report on group facilitated by fpa for WDC
February 2007
I found the course very valuable as it has given me
the confidence to be able to discuss anything with my
children relating to sex education. The books I got
were also very informative.

Co- facilitating the first Speakeasy course in
Scotland was a thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating
experience. The sessions were made all the more
worthwhile thanks to a great group of parents who
were highly motivated and keen to develop skills and
confidence to help them provide positive sex and
relationships education for their children.
(Facilitator)
I really enjoyed getting to know the other people in
the group and being able to talk openly about sex
education.

The time flew by – I wish the groups had been
longer.
(Participant)
It’s made it so much easier to answer questions as
I now know they just need a simple, straightforward
answer, and then I can stop, rather than going into
some massive explanation!

fpa’s mission is: “To advance the sexual health and reproductive rights and choices of all
people throughout the UK”. We work with the public and professionals to ensure high
quality information and services are available to all who need them.
In the summer of 2006 fpa was approached by Louise Anusas, from the Education and
Cultural Services department of West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), to deliver our
Speakeasy programme to a group of parents in Clydebank.
This was to be on a pilot basis to establish that it could complement the comprehensive
sexual health education programme Clydemuir Primary School had developed. This
programme involves a parent’s workshop prior to its start, at which parents had identified
the need for increased support and information on sexual health education during the
workshop evaluation.
Funding for the pilot was raised between West Dunbartonshire Council, NHS Argyle and
Clyde and fpa and it was agreed to deliver the course between September and November
2006.
