Abstract
A new composite of HA reinforced polyamide 66 and high density polyethylene
(HA/PA/PE) composites was prepared by melt mixing in a co-rotation twin screw
extruder. Two series of HA/PA/PE composites with different composition were
investigated by use of SEM, mechanical testing, water absorption and FTIR. The
results showed that the change of composition influenced significantly the properties
of HA/PA/PE composites by different mechanism. PE mixing with PA matrix induced
different microstructure and adjusted water absorption and manufacturability. HA
filler had hydrogen bonding with the polar groups of PA, improving the adhesion of
interface. Well-dispersed spherical PE particles of composite obviously improved the
tensile strength and modulus but decreased the water absorption a little. When more
PE added, composites formed net microstructure with many cavities and microcracks
existing. The net structure led the mechanical properties decreasing but the water
absorption largely improving. The adhesion between HA and PA by hydrogen
bonding reinforced the mechanical properties of composites and also adjusted the
water absorption by reducing the bonding between PA and water molecules. The novel
composite may be used as cortical bone substitute in the future.
