Lesson Outline
Lesson Summary
In 2001, the Advanced Technology Attachment, Parallel ATA, (PATA) interface
faced significant difficulties in achieving speeds greater than 100MB/sec.
Why SATA was Developed
• Lower Voltages Required
• Performance Roadmap
• Lower Pin Count
• Migration to Servers
• New Cables and
Connectors
• Hot-Plug Devices
• Reliability
Possible Software Compatibility
impact = Millions of computers
Possible Cost to Users =
Billions of $
Solution, adapt a Hardware
Change only high speed
interface that requires no
Software change for users.
Lower Voltages are Required
• PATA requires 5v
• New Silicon Require Lower
Voltages
• Manufacturing processes.
• Smaller chips and thinner gate oxides.
• 3.3V or lower.
• Voltage reductions expected in near
future.

Rise Time
Data Transition
• SATA signal voltages has been lowered
to 0.7v
• Faster switching
• Smaller Interface ships
• Reduced power

Performance
• Parallel ATA (PATA) performance gains limited:
• Original cables and connectors from 8MB/sec ATA interface
• Add grounds for higher speed (66MB/sec – 133 MB/sec) between
signals (80 Conductor)
• High voltage signal interface needed – slow switching
• Limited transmission capability not suited for next generation of HDDs.
• SATA
• Gen 1: 150MB/sec
• Gen 2: 300MB/sec
• Gen 3: 600 MB/sec
