August <i>Scientific American</i> arrived; many of the engineers where I
worked came in the next morning with some simple Mandelbrot programs,
and by the end of the week nearly everyone had her own program. By
Monday, there was a noticeable sluggishness when trying to get any real
work done on any of the seven company computers (two Vaxen and five
Goulds), caused by the number of Mandelbrot calculations running
simultaneously.</font><font face="Times New Roman, Times, Serif" color="#ffff00" size="3"><!-- break --></font></td>

<td><font face="Times New Roman, Times, Serif" size="3">This scenario
was probably repeated all over the country, although I think our site
had a larger proportion of engineers than most others. At the time, the
best graphics machine I could get my hands on was an Intelecolor
terminal, restricted to downloading at 9600 baud. Even though it took
only five minutes to compute a Mandelbrot on our fastest machine (a
now-extinct Gould NP1), it could take hours to download the resulting
graphic to the display. It was agonizing, and the tube had only eight
colors, anyway. I tried to get the company to spring for an Ethernet
card for my terminal, but my boss said ''No way! I know what you want it
for!" And I could hardly argue with him.</font></td>
