*** INTRODUCTION
Have you ever encountered a problem about "how to backup my n@log data" ?
This n@log plug-in, Data Backup Manager, is designated for a more convenient
and efficient way to solve your problem!
You can use this plug-in to BACKUP your important counter data from your
MySQL datadbase, including time statistics data, referrer data (host & URL),
OS & browser data, visitors' records and board members' connection records.
Once there is loss or corruption of counter data, or you would like to move
the counter(s) to continue operation on another web site, you can still use
the RESTORE function of this plug-in to restore the counter data to the
destinated database.
*** INSTALLATION
This program is a plug-in of navyism@log analyzer 5 (aka n@log 5).
That means, you should have n@log 5 installed and up running prior to
using this plug-in. If you are still using n@log version 3 or 4,
you have to upgrade to n@log 5 in order to use this plug-in.
Firstly, extract all the files with a folder named "data_backup_manager_english"
from the downloaded zip archive to your n@log plug-in folder of local computer.
i.e. C:\www\nalog5\plug_in\data_backup_manager_english
Then, you can start uploading this folder (including all of the files inside)
to the n@log plug-in folder of your FTP server.
*** USING THIS PLUG-IN
Open the n@log counter manager in your browser as usual.
i.e. http://Site_URL/nalog5/admin_counter.php?counter=Counter_Name
You should now notice that there is a plug-in named "Data Backup Manager" in the
plug-in pulldown menu. Select this plug-in from the menu by your mouse.
Notice 1: You must switch your display language (NOT the encoding settings of
your browser) to "English" prior to using this plug-in. Otherwise,
this plug-in is not visible from the pulldown menu.
Notice 2: You must login with administrator's privilege first before you could
access this plug-in.
After you select this plug-in, you should be able to see the plug-in
main screen. There are three items (tabs) showing on the plug-in menu.
The functions of these items are briefly explained as below:
1) Backup : Backup all the n@log data of selected counter(s)
from MySQL tables to an .sql backup file.
(except the current data of "NOW connections")
2) Restore : Restore the n@log data
from an .sql backup file to MySQL tables.
3) Information : Display the information of this plug-in.
Warning: The process of data backup or restore may raise a problem with
server traffic. Consider the bandwidth you've been given before you do so.
Then, you should desire how frequent to backup the data. It is also better
to do data backup or restore procedures on non-peak hours.
*** BACKUP THE DATA
General actions to be taken:
1. Choose a backup method (either download to your local computer or save on
your host server).
2. Select the desired counters to be backup from the list by checking the
corresponding boxes (by default it is all selected).
3. Click the "Backup NOW" button to proceed.
Detailed explaination:
To complete this procedure, Data Backup Manager make use of MySQL query syntax.
Although "mysqldump" is not used for this purpose, we can get the same result.
You can either download the (output) backup file to your local computer, or
have it save on your host server.
Notice 1: If you choose to save the backup file on your host server,
you should make sure that you have enough storage space on it.
And, the file will be saved in your n@log root folder.
Notice 2: It is better to choose downloading the backup file to your local
computer instead of saving on host server, since in some cases
you cannot manually delete a file which was generated by a script
using FTP commands.
The default filename pattern of a n@log 5 backup file is
"nalog5_backup_[Year].[Month].[Day].[Hour].[Minute].[Second].sql"
i.e. nalog5_backup_2003.03.19.20.05.45.sql
It is okay to use another filename of your own choice. But, if the file to be
uploaded is already existed on the server (same filename), the existing file
will be overwritten after you successfully upload it.
The program-generated file is a source file written in SQL-syntax executions.
You can restore this backup file with other restoring tool.
Please note that if you have modified the contents of this file,
it will not be guaranteed for the success of data restoring.
*** RESTORE THE DATA
General actions to be taken:
1. Browse for an .sql backup file from your local computer to be restored to
the database, then click the "Upload NOW" button to upload it to your
n@log root folder using the plug-in interface. This step is required only
if you have not done it yet via an FTP client.
2. Select an available .sql file to be restored from the pulldown menu of
backup files listing.
3. Click the "Restore NOW" button to proceed.
Detailed explaination:
To restore an .sql backup file to the database, firstly you have to upload it
to your n@log root folder. You can upload it either by the plug-in interface
(using PHP file operations) or via an FTP client.
However, you are advised to upload the backup file(s) via FTP instead of
the plug-in interface, since in some cases you cannot manually delete a file
which was uploaded by a script using FTP commands. Also, it is possibly that
there is a file size limit (e.g. 2MB) set about file uploading by scripting.
Data Backup Manager will search for available .sql backup file(s) in your
n@log root folder, and then it will be shown in the pulldown menu of backup
files listing. (If you have just uploaded a backup file successfully, you are
probably able to see that filename on the list at once.)
Notice: You must clean the data of targeted counter(s) using counter manager
before you are going to restore old data from the backup file. Otherwise,
the counter data will be mixed together.
