Introduction
Welcome to the Migration to vCenter Server 4.1 and the ESX(i) Upgrade Labs.
In this lab, there will be 4 components, an ESX 4.0 Update 1 and ESXi 4.0 Update 1 VM’s, a vCenter
Server 4.0 and a Windows 2003 x64 VM Base OS.
The objective here is to get hands-on experience of installing:
a) Running the vSphere 4.1 Pre-Upgrade Checker
b) Migrating from vCenter Server 4.0 to vCenter Server 4.1
c) Migrating from Update Manager 4.0 to Update Manager 4.1
d) Upgrade of ESX 4.0 Update 1 to ESX 4.1
e) Upgrade of ESXi 4.0 Update 1 to ESXi 4.1
f) Importing Offline Patches in Update Manager
g) Update Manager Patch Notifications
For the vCenter Server 4.1 Migration we will be using the bundled MS Server 2005 Express Database.
In this lab, we will be ‘eating our own dog food’. What this means is that we will be using our very
own VMware Lab Manager product to deploy controlled lab environments.
