The call for papers of the Workshop on Integrated-reliability with Telecommunica-
tions and UML Languages (WITUL) invited tutorial overview papers on ITU-T
languages:
ASN.1 Abstract Syntax Notation One ITU X.680 - X.689;
SDL Specification and Description Language ITU Z.100 - Z.109;
MSC Message Sequence Chart ITU Z.120 - Z.129;
eODL extended Object Description Language ITU Z.130 - Z.129;
TTCN Test and Test Control Notation ITU Z.140 - Z.149;
URN User Requirements Notation ITU Z.150 - Z.159.
Part of the rationale is that some delegates may be attending specifically to learn
something about these languages. This tutorial is not a submitted paper, but was
decided on by the programme committee to start the work shop with review of
languages and set the scene for the day.
Jens Grabowski has worked with ITU languages since the late 1980’s with
experience at Siemens, and the Universities of Berne, Lübeck and now Göttingen
where he is a Professor. He was concerned with protocol validation on SDL and
MSC, and most recently has been involved in TTCN-3 maintenance and the UML
testing profile. He has published many papers in these fields.
Rick Reed has worked with ITU languages since the early 1980’s has been
involved in the standardisation of SDL and MSC. In the 2000-2004 period he was
chairman of the working party responsible for the standards for ASN.1, MSC, SDL
and URN. He is currently responsible for SDL and eODL and the ITU project
“Language Co-ordination”. He works as an independent consultant through his
own company, TSE limited.
