Introducing

WebDB

ne of the important features added to Oracle8i is really

more than just a feature—it’s a complete product called

WebDB. As the name implies, WebDB is a tool that helps you to

take the data in your Oracle database and make it available to

users on the Web. Although WebDB comes with Oracle8i, you

can also download the product for no cost from the Oracle

Technical Network at

http://technet.oracle.com.

This chapter is meant to be a brief introduction to WebDB, which

is a comprehensive product. It provides an overview of the

makeup of WebDB, an example of using WebDB to create a report

to familiarize you with the product, and some information on

how you can perform basic administrative functions for WebDB,

since this will quite possibly be a part of your overall job.

If you want to learn considerably more about WebDB, we rec-

ommend that you consult The Oracle WebDB Bible by Rick

Greenwald and James Milbery (IDG Books Worldwide, Inc.).

An Overview of WebDB and

Internet Computing

WebDB is a tool that has been designed to create Internet

computing application systems. Internet computing is a term

that applies to an infrastructure that uses a Web browser as

the key user interface on the client and a server on the back

end. Unlike client/server computing, Internet computing uses

a different communication protocol, HTTP, and a different

display interface, HTML, and typically implements stateless

transactions. Stateless transactions are complete within each

page of data exchanged.

WebDB not only creates information systems that run in the Internet computing

environment, but the product itself is an Internet computing application. This means

that all of the advantages of Internet computing apply to the actual process of

building applications with WebDB as well as to the applications created with WebDB.

This chapter uses the term WebDB site somewhat interchangeably with the term

WebDB application system. In fact, a WebDB application system is much like a

normal Web site. In WebDB, a site is a collection of a variety of information, from

standard static HTML pages and data-driven dynamically constructed pages to

interactive forms and any datatype supported by a browser, including graphics and

sound. WebDB gives users and developers the ability to freely add new information

to a site, such as late-breaking news related to the site.

Understanding the architecture of a WebDB site

Before you learn about the components of WebDB, you should have a basic

understanding of how a WebDB site is implemented. A WebDB system has three

basic pieces, with each serving a specific function. Not surprisingly, these match up

with the components of Internet computing described previously. The three pieces

that make up a WebDB system are as follows:

✦ Client software. The only client software that WebDB requires is a Web

browser capable of using HTML version 3. This includes all of the major Web

browsers.

✦ Communications. The WebDB client uses HTTP to communicate with the server.

This typically means that TCP/IP will be the underlying communications protocol

between the client and the server machines. Note that the communications

protocol is not an Oracle communications protocol, so SQL*Net or Net8 aren’t

required for WebDB clients.

✦ Server software. WebDB needs two different types of server software: a

listener, which will pick up the HTTP requests from the client, and an Oracle

server capable of executing the WebDB application code.

The client component acts as the user interface to information stored in a WebDB

site. The use of the browser as the client environment means that all WebDB

content will take the form of an HTML page. The page can be static, or it can be

generated dynamically. It can include different media types, including graphics, and

it can act as a way to collect information from the user through the use of a form.

But at its core, it is still an HTML page—nothing more, nothing less. This concept

will help you to understand the framework of a WebDB information system.

The communications component passes requests for pages to the server

component and receives the HTML pages that are returned from the server.

Examining WebDB components

WebDB has a number of different components that help you to create, deploy, and

maintain a WebDB application system. These components are organized around

four basic functions, which are the four choices from the top-level WebDB menu,

as shown in Figure 26-1:

✦ Building WebDB components, database objects, and sites

✦ Administering WebDB components, sites, and configuration parameters

✦ Monitoring the operation of your WebDB system

When you first enter WebDB, you choose one of these areas before moving on to

working on your own WebDB components. The top-level menu is accessible from

any location within the WebDB environment, so it acts as a basic context switcher

for the development environment. Let’s look at the options available on this top-

level menu.

Browsing Application Components

As explained previously, the WebDB environment is, in effect, hosted by an Oracle

database. All the static information that WebDB and WebDB applications use is

contained within the Oracle database. The data that is used as the source of

information for dynamically built WebDB content is typically kept in the Oracle

database. The code that makes up both the WebDB product itself and the

components built with WebDB are all contained in PL/SQL packages, which are

typically executed by the Oracle database.

WebDB’s Browse functionality gives you the ability to examine the different types

of objects and data in the Oracle database that acts as the host for WebDB. You

can use different options in the Browse section of WebDB to examine the WebDB

components stored in the database, as well as standard database objects, such as

tables, indexes, and a variety of other more specific database objects. Regular end

users can also use WebDB’s browsing capabilities to access their own data in the

Oracle database, since all data access through WebDB is controlled by standard

database security.

Building WebDB Components

The WebDB component builders are where your development effort will normally

start. This area lets you build the WebDB user interface components and construct

Web sites using these components.

You will no doubt be spending most of your time building user interface

components in WebDB. Four basic types of user interface objects exist, each of

which uses one or more of the following builders:

✦ Read-only, which includes the builders for reports, charts, and calendars

✦ Read-write, which includes the builder for forms

✦ HTML, which includes the builders for dynamic HTML pages and frame

drivers

✦ Organization, which includes the builders for menus and hierarchies

When you access the User Interface Components section of the WebDB

development environment, you gain access to all of the builders through the menu

shown in Figure 26-2.

You can access the user interface builders from a shortcut menu bar that is at the

bottom of almost all of the tools in WebDB, as shown at the bottom of Figure 26-2.

Table 26-1 describes each of the builders.

Component Builders

Button Name Description

Reports The Reports builder in WebDB leads you through the

process of creating reports. A report is a dynamic HTML

page that is created from a query on data in the Oracle

database. The Reports builder can create HTML reports,

ASCII preformatted data, and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets

directly from database data.

You can create reports that accept parameters to produce

dynamic reports based on selection criteria. When you

create a report with parameters, WebDB automatically

creates a parameter entry form for you. You or your users

can also apply a number of default parameters to every

report to control attributes such as sort order.
