The Adams Tracked Vehicle (ATV) Toolkit is an add-on
toolkit for Adams developed by MSC.Software Sweden in co-
operation with end users. This toolkit allows the user to
create, modify and simulate realistic 3D models of tracked
vehicles in the Adams environment.
ATV can be used for a wide range of applications, such as
dynamic mobility studies, turret and weapon control design,
sprocket teeth design, high speed turning events, road wheel
suspension design, track tension optimization, failure and
panic event studies, generation of accurate loads for stress
and fatigue analysis, and more.
Some of the features included in the toolkit are:
• Graphical user interface for creation and modification of
tracked vehicle models
• Database structure
• Routine that automatically wraps the track segments
around the wheels
• Force-based connection between track segments
• CAD import of contact geometries
• 3D road input using Adams/Tire file format
• Realistic, fully 3-dimensional model of track
• Simplified, 2-dimensional model of track
• Soft soil interaction that keeps history (memory model)
based on Bekker theory, or on user-written subroutine
• Linear, non-linear, or rigid characteristics of track
tensioner device
• Ability to set initial length of tensioner device based on
tensioner force or track force
• Track Testing analysis to test the Track System before
using it in a full vehicle
The interface and database structure for the ATV toolkit is
same as for other industry-specific modules (Adams/Car,
Adams/Driveline, etc). Pre-defined components including
track segment, track wheel, tensioner, spring-damper and
hull simplify the process of building complete tracked vehicle
models. ATV is delivered with two complete sets of database
files, one for a military tank and one for a construction-
equipment crawler. All standard Adams functionality is
available to the user, which means that flexible bodies,
controllers, hydraulic systems, etc can be added to the model
in order to create a complete vehicle. This can be a military
tank, an excavator, a crawler, a snow mobile, or any other
kind of tracked vehicle.
