Performance Analysis of Blockchain

The Blockchain built on peer-to-peer networks, is currently receiving much
attentions as a means of sharing and distributing information. One of the most
challenges of Blockchain or the P2P network is a tradeoff between a superior
security and an efficient performance[1]. In this report, we use the Queuing
Theory to analyze the performance bottleneck of Blockchain, and propose many
possible performance improvement strategies from different aspects, such as
GPU, FPGA, the scale of P2P network, public-key cryptography and etc.
1 P2P Network
P2P network is a distributed application architecture that partitions tasks or
workloads between peers. Peers are equally privileged, equipotent participants
in the application.

Fig.1 shows one of the bigest differences between traditional C/S and the
P2P network. For P2P, peers could communicate with each other in the absence
of a third party or server. However, P2P network also pose many challenges
and many P2P applications can contain vulnerabilities. Generally, there are
both advantages and disadvantages in P2P network related to the topic of data
backup, sharing, availability and many others.
2 Serial Queuing Model for Blockchain/P2P
For Blockchain, each peer in the P2P network has to download, encrypt, verify,
sign and upload transactions. In this report, we considered each peer node as a
