Dear Reader,
It is clear that Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) is the future of development
from Microsoft’s perspective. We agree. Development is no longer a person-
al pursuit by one developer in a darkened room; it is a collective effort by a
team of peers. VSTS supports this broader vision by providing a complete col-
laboration platform for the entire project team. VSTS takes a service-oriented
approach, leveraging Windows SharePoint Services and the SQL Server Business
Intelligence suite. Additionally, VSTS makes the entire software development
life cycle part of the integrated suite.
Visual Studio Team System has been on the market for almost two years now,
and the adoption rate has been everything we expected. Microsoft is commit-
ted to VSTS as the future tool for its Application Lifecycle Management (ALM)
strategy. Over the past year or so, Microsoft has made considerable changes
and improvements to VSTS. The biggest change has been the release of the
Database Professionals edition.
Pro Visual Studio Team System with Team Edition for Database Professionals,
Second Edition contains more than 100 new pages devoted to all aspects of the
Database Professionals tools. This includes coverage of the just-released Power
Tools for Database Professionals. We think this tool has the power to substan-
tially change how database development is done, much the same way the rest
of VSTS has changed the way developers work. The features covered for the
Database Professionals edition also cover the functionality that will be released
with Visual Studio 2008. (This book does not contain updated material for any
of the other technologies related to Visual Studio 2008.)
If you are just considering adopting VSTS, you will find the comprehensive
overview very informative. You will also be able to dive into any area and get
detailed descriptions, samples, and walk-through demonstrations.
Roll up your sleeves, and get ready for a new way of developing solutions!
