• Models for Propagation of NORAD Element Sets

    General perturbations element sets generated by NORAD can be used to predict position and velocity of Earth-orbiting objects. To do this one must be careful to use a prediction method which is compatible with the way in which the elements were generated. Equations for ¯ve compatible models are given here along with corresponding FORTRAN IV computer code. With this information a user will be able to make satellite predictions which are completely compatible with NORAD predictions.

  • Genaral Mission Analysis Tool

    The General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) is a space trajectory simulation, analysis, and optimization system developed by a team made up of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and private industry partners. It is developed as open source under the NASA Open Source Agreement: not only is the source code for each release available for download, but the primary development repository is hosted publicly at SourceForge.net. Here at GSFC, it’s been used as a primary or secondary design tool on many of our most exciting missions: LCROSS, ARTEMIS, LRO, MMS, OSIRIS, and others. And externally, it’s been used by entities as varied as the Air Force Research Lab, Iowa State University, and the European Space Agency. Contributors to this release included NASA GSFC civil servants, Thinking Systems Inc., and A.I. Solutions.

  • Unscented Filtering and Nonlinear Estimation

    The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is probably the most widely used estimation algorithm for nonlinear systems. However, more than 35 years of experience in the estimation community has shown that is difficult to implement, difficult to tune, and only reliable for systemsthatarealmostlinearonthetimescaleoftheupdates.Many of these difficulties arise from its use of linearization. To overcome thislimitation,theunscentedtransformation(UT)wasdevelopedas a method to propagate mean and covariance information through nonlineartransformations.Itismoreaccurate,easiertoimplement, andusesthe same order ofcalculationsas linearization. Thispaper reviews the motivation, development, use, and implications of the UT.

  • Teaching academic English writing_ practical techniques

    Since the late 1970s and early 1980s, a great deal of time, energy, and re- sources have been devoted to teaching non-native L2 writers the rhetorical features of written academic discourse in English. In addition, to meet mar- ket demands and the expectations of professional training and preparation for English as a Second Language and English for Academic Purposes teachers, teacher-training and graduate programs have set out to address teachers' on-the-job skills that pertain to teaching L2 academic writers how to generate and organize ideas into coherent essays and compositions, as is expected of practically all students at undergraduate and graduate levels. There is little doubt that L2 writers need to be familiar with many rhetor- ical and discourse features of written English and that the teaching of col- lege- or university-level writing cannot do without them. In teaching L2 writing to academically bound learners, what has become of smaller impor- tance, however, is the language tools (i.e., the grammar and vocabulary that L2 writers must have to construct academic text, which in turn can be orga- nized into a coherent written academic discourse). To put it plainly, no mat- ter how well discourse is organized or how brilliant the writer's ideas may be, it would be hard to understand them if the language is opaque.
