Thisbookdescribestheevolutionof3Gdigitalcellularintoanadvancedbroadband mobileaccess.Thefocusofthisbookisontheevolutionofthe3Gmobilecommu- nicationasdevelopedinthe3GPPstandardization(ThirdGenerationPartnership Project),lookingattheradioaccessandaccessnetworkevolution. Thisbookisdividedintofiveparts.PartIgivesthebackgroundto3Gandits evolution,lookingalsoatthedifferentstandardsbodiesandorganizationsinvolved intheprocessofdefining3G.Itisfollowedbyadiscussionofthereasonsand drivingforcesbehindthe3Gevolution.PartIIgivesadeeperinsightintosome ofthetechnologiesthatareincluded,orareexpectedtobeincludedaspartofthe 3Gevolution.Becauseofitsgenericnature,PartIIcanbeusedasabackground notonlyfortheevolutionstepstakenin3GPPasdescribedinthisbook,butalso forreadersthatwanttounderstandthetechnologybehindothersystems,suchas WiMAXandCDMA2000. FinallyinPartV,anassessmentismadeofthe3Gevolution.Anevaluationofthe performanceputsthe3Gevolutiontracksinrelationtothetargetssetin3GPP. Throughanoverviewofsimilartechnologiesdevelopedinotherstandardsbodies, itwillbeclearthatthetechnologiesadoptedfortheevolutionin3GPPareimple- mentedinmanyothersystemsaswell.Finallylookingintothefuture,itwillbe seenthatthe3GevolutiondoesnotstopwiththeHSPAEvolutionandLTE.
