Computer Networks and Distributed Computing
Exercise 1: HTTP, SMTP, FTP & Introduction to Wireshark
AIM
HTTP: To gain better understanding of HTTP by exploring the requests/responses that web
client and servers exchange.
FTP: To get a glimpse into the working of FTP and understand the various interactions that
are involved between the client and server.
Wireshark: To learn how to use the Wireshark packet analyser. This tool will be used
extensively in the subsequent labs to study protocol interactions in greater detail.
Delays: Investigate cross-country packet delays using ping.
EXPERIMENT 1: HTTP
Tools
We will use the TELNET program for this experiment.
Telnet is a terminal emulation program for remote computing on the Internet. It allows
a computer to act as a remote terminal on another machine, anywhere on the Internet.
This means that when you telnet to a particular host and port, the remote computer
(which must have a telnet server) accepts input directly from your computer (which
must have a telnet client) and output for your session is directed to your screen. You
can then enter commands through the telnet connection and they will be executed as if
you were entering them directly on the remote computer. Telnet runs over TCP.
