Slew rate is defined as the maximum rate of change of an op amp’s output
voltage and is given units of volts per microsecond. Slew rate is measured by
applying a large signal step, such as 1V, to the input of the op amp, and
measuring the rate of change from 10% to 90% of the output signal’s amplitude.
The data sheet large-signal step response is an indication of the amplifiers slew
rate. In this example, we calculate the slew rate to be about 29V/us. Again, the
slew rate definition only considers the rate of change of the signal from 10% to
90%, which in this case is 1V to 9V.
Slew rate is a different specification than small-signal bandwidth, which
considers differential input signals of ±100mV or less.
