A new design of light illumination scheme for deep tissue photoacoustic imaging
2017-03-06Abstract: A new light illumination scheme to increase imaging depth in photoacoustic (PA) imaging was designed and evaluated by in silico simulations and tested by in vitro experiments. A relatively large portion of the light energy shining into the body of a human reflects off the skin surfaces. Collecting the reflected light and redirecting it onto skin surfaces will increase the effective input energy, resulting in an increase of light penetration depth for the same light source. Its performance in PA imaging was evaluated using a finite element (FE)-based numerical simulation model composed of four modules. In the in vitro experiments with the light catcher, PA image of multiple targets at different locations exhibited an enhancement both in uniformity and in depth of the light illumination.

An numerical method for fast nonlinear model predictive control
2011-04-18The application of optimization-based control methods such as nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to real-world process models is still a major computational challenge. In this paper, we present a new numerical optimization scheme suited for NMPC. The SQP-type approach uses an inexact constraint Jacobian in its iterations and is based on adjoint derivatives, that can be computed very efficiently. In comparison to a similar real-time algorithm based on directional sensitivities and an exact constraint Jacobian, the computational complexity is significantly reduced. Both algorithms are applied to the model of a thermally coupled distillation column for disturbance rejection. The results provide a proof-of- principle for the proposed adjoint-based optimization approach.

Modified anti-windup scheme for PID controllers
2019-03-25Abstract: An anti-windup scheme for proportional-integral-derivative controllers is presented. The approach is based on the combined use of back-calculation and conditional integration anti- windup techniques. In this way, the disadvantages that can hinder previously proposed strategies are overcome. Specifically, the method can guarantee a satisfactory performance for processes with different normalised dead times, without the tuning of additional parameters being required. Therefore, considering its simplicity, it is highly suitable for implementation in industrial regulators.
