Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) have been found to be ubiquitous. More than 70 putative HSP
genes were found in rice (Oryza sativa L.), but few of them have been characterized. Expression
patterns of nine rice OsHSP genes were analyzed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The nine
OsHSPs were named OsHSP80.2, OsHSP74.8, OsHSP71.1, OsHSP58.7, OsHSP50.2,
OsHSP26.7, OsHSP24.3, OsHSP24.1 and OsHSP16.9 respectively according to their
approximate molecular weight. The nine genes showed different expression profiles in roots,
leaves, leaf sheaths, spikes and embryos. All nine OsHSP genes were induced strongly by heat
shock treatment, whereas none of them were induced by cold. The transcripts of OsHSP80.2,
OsHSP71.1 and OsHSP24.3 were increased during salt tress treatment. Expression of
OsHSP80.2 and OsHSP24.1 genes were enhanced while treated with 10% PEG. Only
OsHSP71.1 was induced by ABA while OsHSP24.1 was inhibited by ABA.

1 Introduction
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) were first discovered in Drosophila in 1962 and have been reported in
all organisms, including plants [1]. Based on their approximate molecular weight, HSPs are grouped
into 5 families: HSP100s, HSP90s, HSP70s, HSP60s and sHSPs (small HSPs, less than 40 kDa) [2].
Plants elevate the expression of HSPs while exposed to high temperature and certain other stresses.
In soybean, Arabidopsis and tobacco, HSPs expressions were enhanced by elevated temperature [3-5].
Lee et al. (2000) [6] demonstrated a rice chloroplast sHSP gene increased its expression at the
transcript as well as protein level under oxidative stress. In tomato, sHSPs were shown to be induced
by oxidative stress [7]. In spinach, HSP70 genes increased expression during cold acclimation [8]. The
level of HSP100 transcripts has also been reported to accumulate in wheat during dehydration and
abscisic acid besides heat stress treatments [9]. The expression of rice HSP90 mRNA was enhanced by
exposure to salts, desiccation, high pH as well as high temperature [10]. Recently, a class II small heat
