The ABC Inventory (ABC) (Adair
&
Blesch,
1965)
is a “quick” test
of
kin-
dergarten readiness which is widely used in Michigan, but which has not been
extensively investigated. Griggs
(1972)
reported correlations of
.43,
.40,
and
.32
between preschool ABC scores and scores on the reading, spelling, and arithmetic
subtests of the Wide Range Achievement Test obtained at the beginning
of
second
grade. Griggs also reported an unpublished study in which a correlation of
.77
was obtained between preschool ABC scores and Metropolitan Readiness Test
scores at the end
of
kindergarten.
In the present study, the predictive validity and factor structure of the ABC
were analyzed by comparing scores obtained by preschoolers on this test with scores
of the same children on the Metropolitan Readiness Test (MRT) (Hildreth, Griffiths,
&
McGauvran,
1964).
The MRT was used as
a
standard measure
of
kindergarten
achievement
for
several reasons. First, the major alternative, kindergarten report
cards, was not acceptable because the format and content of these report cards
varied from year to year and between classrooms, and because many
of
the report
cards evaluated each child’s achievement in relation to his
or
her own ability level
rather than some consistent, independent standard.
Also, the MRT was judged
acceptable as a measure of kindergarten achievement because
it:
