A Design Methodology for Highly-Integrated Low-Power Receivers for Wireless Communications2010-07-21
Due to its potential to offer ubiquitous information access, wireless connectivity is playing an increasingly significant role in communications systems. The success of future wireless systems will depend heavily on their ability to provide high capacity while maintaining low cost, small form factor, and low power consumption in the portable devices. However, many existing commercial transceivers are expensive, consist of a large number of discrete components, and exhibit moderate to high levels of power consumption. One possible explanation for these inefficient solutions lies in the historically unilateral relationship between system designers and hardware designers. An efficient solution requires a design strategy which tightly incorporates implementation issues throughout the process of defining the system specifications. This thesis describes a design methodology which facilitates the evaluation of tradeoffs between implementation issues and overall system performance, focusing primarily on the receiver as an example. First, system-level specifications, such as modulation scheme and signal bandwidth, strongly influence the choice of receiver architecture, which in turn, has ramifications on the achievable power consumption and integration level. When system-level specifications are determined without considering their impact on receiver architecture selection, single-chip solutions may be very difficult to achieve or just simply infeasible.
A Design Methodology for Switched-Capacitor DC-DC Converters2010-08-11
Switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC power converters are a subset of DC-DC power con- verters that use a network of switches and capacitors to eciently convert one voltage to another. Unlike traditional inductor-based DC-DC converters, SC converters do not rely on magnetic energy storage. This fact makes SC converters ideal for integrated implementa- tions, as common integrated inductors are not yet suitable for power electronic applications. While they are only capable of a nite number of conversion ratios, SC converters can sup- port a higher power density compared with traditional converters for a given conversion ratio. Finally, through simple control methods, regulation over many magnitudes of output power is possible while maintaining high eciency.

Reliability and maintenance modeling of multi-state degraded systems2013-03-13
In this paper, we develop a generalized multi-state degraded system reliability model subject to multiple competing failure processes, including two degradation processes, and random shocks. The operating condition of the multi-state systems is characterized by a finite number of states. We also present a methodology to generate the system states when there are multi-failure processes. The model can be used not only to determine the reliability of the degraded systems in the context of multi-state functions, but also to obtain the states of the systems by calculating the system state probabilities. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the concepts.

A global Particle Swarm-Based-Simulated Annealing Optimization technique for under-voltage load shedding problem2010-05-09
In this paper, a new approach based on hybrid Particle Swarm-Based-Simulated Annealing Optimization technique (PSO-B-SA) is proposed for solving under-voltage load shedding (UVLS) problem. Undervoltage load shedding (UVLS) is one of the most important tools for avoiding voltage instability. In this paper, the UVLS problem is formulated based on the concept of the static voltage stability margin and its sensitivity at the maximum loading point or the collapse point. The voltage stability criterion is modeled directly into the load-shedding scheme. In any UVLS scheme finding the global point is very important for having cost effective economy. The proposed PSO-B-SA methodology is implemented in the undervoltage load shedding scheme for IEEE 14 and 118 bus test systems. In addition to having better solution, the global property of the proposed approach plays an important role in on-line applications. Simulation results show the efficacy and advantage of the proposed scheme
