billionairesonThursdaytostepuptohelpsavesome30millionpeoplewhohesaidare
atriskofdyingiftheydon'treceivehelpfromtheWorldFoodProgramme.
Globallysome270millionpeoplewereheadedtowardthebrinkofstarvationandWFP
hopestoreach138millionpeoplethisyear,BeasleytoldtheU.N.SecurityCouncil.
"Weneed$4.9billiontofeed,foroneyear,all30millionpeoplewhowilldiewithout
WFP'sassistance,"Beasleysaid,notingthattherearesome2,000billionaireswithanet
worthof$8trillionandseveralmadebillionsduringthepandemic.
"Iamnotopposedtopeoplemakingmoney,buthumanityisfacingthegreatestcrisisany
ofushaveseeninourlifetimes,"saidtheformerSouthCarolinagovernor.
ThecombinedwealthofAmerica'sbillionairesjumpedover19%orbyhalfatrillionsince
theoutbreakofthenovelcoronaviruspandemicintheUnitedStates,accordingtoa
reportpublishedbytheInstituteforPolicyStudies(IPS)inJune.
In the 11 weeks from March 18,when lockdowns started in some U.S.states,
Amazon.com IncfounderJeffBezossawhiswealthsoarbyabout$36.2billion,while
FacebookIncCEOMarkZuckerberg'sfortunesurgedbyabout$30.1billion.TeslaInc
ChiefExecutiveElonMusk'snetworthalsorose$14.1billion.
"It'stimeforthosewhohavethemosttostepup,tohelpthosewhohavetheleastinthis
extraordinarytimeinworldhistory,"Beasleysaid."Theworldneedsyourightnowandit's
