It is believed that IoT will improve energy ef ciency, remote monitoring, and control of physical assets and productivity through applications as diverse as home security to condition monitor- ing on the factory oor. Now IoT has been used in markets in the eld of health care, home appliances and buildings, retail markets, energy and manufacturing companies, mobility and transportation, logistics companies, and by media. Equipments are becoming more digitized and more connected, establishing networks between machines, humans, and the Internet, leading to the creation of new ecosystems that enable higher productivity, better energy ef ciency, and higher pro tability. Sensors help to recognize the state of things, by which they gain the advantage of anticipating human needs based on the information collected per context. These intelligent devices not only gather information from their environment but are also capable of taking deci- sions without human intervention. IoT technology is being used in our day-to-day life for unlocking the door without a key; in card recognizers, automatic locks, vehicle detecting systems, toll payment system; and for tracking animals, access control, payment systems, contactless smart cards, anti-theft devices, steering column reader, etc. The IoT building blocks will come from those that are web-enabled devices, providing common platforms on which they can communicate, and develop new applications to capture new users. The book comprises 14 chapters. The chapterwise description of contents in the volume is as follows. For seamless visual tracking of passengers traveling in a vehicle, the visual light trans- mission (VLT) and visual light re ectance (VRT) values of the glass windows used in the vehicle should be at a particular value. All vehicle manufacturers follow certain standards. But the vehicle owner/user generally buys window-tinting lms from the gray market and pastes the same on the glass windows, which in turn hamper the visibility, thereby preventing the law enforcement authorities from having a clear view of those traveling in the vehicle. In Chapter 1, a proposal for the automatic detection of tint level for vehi- cles is presented. The system has been designed using ordinary cameras that work in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The system is capable of identifying a vehicle’s registered number using algorithms developed for this purpose. Various ltering techniques are applied to nd the level of tint from the captured camera images. Using three different techniques, namely, color segmentation, contour detection, and histogram analysis, the tint level of windshield/window region is estimated. Thus, the IoT system recognizes the numbers on the number plate and can fetch the contact details of the owner from the database. It also communicates the same information to the owner with details on and extent of tint level violation along with documentary evidence.

Although I am not an expert in economics; I just want to add to this based on my common sense approach on the present financial crisis, which has developed after his book Creating a World Without Poverty was written. Both governments and people have failed to grasp the extent of the financial crisis. The examples of the financial crisis are just symptoms of a decayed economic system; some of the most problematic sectors have not even come to the surface yet. The U.S. Government would have been best served by letting the old system collapse, and should not have bailed out the big investment banks. Rather, the government should have helped the people who were most desperate. The bailout was a reward for failure, in favor of the privileged and advantaged. It was the taxpayers and disadvantaged ones paying the price and assuming the risk. This is the perfect time for starting a new economic model, based on social capitalism, which values humanity. The bailouts and stimulus packages are a short-term solution that does not really attempt to solve the overreaching problem. It is going to be slow and painful economic recovery. Nothing is wrong with tax increases for the rich and cutting unnecessary government and public spending. In a time of crisis, the very rich should be the part of the solution. Some things to keep in mind as this global integration takes place, is that there should be separate international banks for the global economy; commercial banks for the wealthy and corporations, and small community banks for the middle to working class. When the British ruled India, their administrative structure was hierarchical (capitalistic), they used knowledge management (socialistic) methods which included tangible and intangible values approach. Information went from the bottom of the chain to the top, information was gathered (data gathering with interviews, investigations and direct supervision) and filtered, whereupon the data would be used to address a given problem and come up with a solution for strong productivity and efficiency. The Changjiang (Yangtze) River, the fifth largest river in the world in terms of water discharge, empties into the northwest corner of the East China Sea (ECS), one of the largest fisheries in the world. Annual water discharge reaches 924.8 109 m3 y1 , and the nutrient flux of inorganic nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and silicate (Si) is 6.1 1010 , 7.7 108 , and 9.4 1010 mole y1 , respec- tively [Tian et al., 1993; Liu et al., 2003; Duan et al., 2000]. Fresh water discharge before 2003 peaked between June and August, during which time the mixing of fresh water and seawater forms the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) zone in the ECS [Beardsley et al., 1985; Gong et al., 1996; Chen et al., 2003]. The CDW generally has a salinity of less than 31 psu, and as being influenced by the southwest monsoon, it is widely distributed throughout a trapezoidal region within the 60-m isobath between the latitudes of 27 and 32N (Figure 1). This traditionally nutrient-rich (TNR) region has been characterized by high primary productivity (PP), which develops beyond the turbid zone associated with the river mouth [Gong et al., 2003]. For this reason, the ECS has become an extremely rich fishing ground and an important sink for atmospheric CO2 [Tsunogai et al., 1999; Peng et al., 1999; Chen and Wang, 1999].  Notwithstanding the wealth and the importance of the ECS, the construction of the Three-Gorges Dam (TGD) was begun in 1994 about 2000 km upstream from the mouth of the Changjiang River, with the first filling stage of the reservoir completed in June 2003. Slated to begin full-scale operations in 2009, this dam will be the largest dam in the world. The TGD will have important positive effects, such as controlling flooding, aiding navigation, and hydroelec- tricity, but it will also change sediment loading, seasonality of flow rate and nutrient flux to coastal area (W. C. Jones and M. Freeman, Schiller Institute Great Infrastructure Projects, Three Gorges Dam, 2005, available at http:// www.schillerinstitute.org/economy/phys_econ/phys_ econ_3_gorges.html, hereinafter referred to as Jones and Freeman, 2005). According to previous high-frequency investigations, high PP usually appears in the TNR region of the ECS between June and August (i.e., flood season) due to high nutrient loading and appropriate growth con- ditions [Gong et al., 2003]. However, there is little pub- lished data to show how the ecosystem of the TNR region in the ECS is affected by the construction of the TGD. In this paper, we will report the preliminary response of the ECS’s ecosystem to the construction of TGD, especially in terms of shifts in river discharge, nutrient flux, sediments loading, PP, and phytoplankton species shift. This paper will also help in our understanding of how marine ecosystems are influenced by giant dam construction.
