Installing ASP.NET Portal Using PRTL.exe
PRTL.exe is a command line utility for installing the Portal Starter Kit. The main purpose
of this utility is to provide multiple deployments of the Starter Kits on a single web server.
For example, this can be used to deploy the Starter Kits in a hosting environment where
multiple users (customers) can reside in a single server.
You need administrative rights on all servers for PRTL.exe to complete successfully.
Note: Please use the command line utility executable to install multiple instances of the
application. The MSI can only be used once to install/extract the application to the local
machine.
PRTL.exe is flexible and configurable. Below is the list of parameters that configure
PRTL.exe.
Variable Name Description
INSTALL_OPTION FULL: Install both web and database components. All required
arguments must be specified.
DB: Install only the specified database instance. Required arguments:
DB_FILES_DIR, DB_SERVER, DB_NAME, DB_OWNER_LOGIN,
DB_OWNER_PWD, SQL_ADMIN_USER, SQL_ADMIN_PWD
WEB: Install only the web component. Required arguments:
WEB_FILES_DIR, TARGET_DIR, IIS_SERVER, WEB_SITE, VDIR,
DB_CONNECTION, DB_NAME, DB_SERVER, DB_OWNER_LOGIN,
DB_OWNER_PWD
COPY_ONLY: Copy files WEB_FILES_DIR to TARGET_DIR on the
specified IIS_SERVER machine. Required arguments: IIS_SERVER,
WEB_FILES_DIR, TARGET_DIR
WEB_FILES_DIR Fully qualified/relative path to where the Portal Web files are located.
DB_FILES_DIR Fully qualified/relative path to where the database scripts are located.
TARGET_DIR Fully qualified/relative path to where all the web files will be copied. A
sub-folder will be created under this TARGET_DIR the web
application. This must be a fully qualified local path.
IIS_SERVER Computer name where IIS is installed and where all web files will be
copied.
WEB_SITE Existing web site where virtual directories will be created. This must
match ServerComment Property from IIS (e.g. Default Web Site)
VDIR Virtual directory name for the new Portal application.
DB_CONNECTION Selects how the Portal application connects to the DB server. Use
SQL for the value. (Integrated security is not supported.)
DB_SERVER Computer name where SQL Server is installed.
DB_NAME Database instance where all SQL objects will be installed. Install in an
existing database by specifying an existing database name.
DB_OWNER_LOGIN SQL login that will be created (if not already in existence) and be the
owner of DB_NAME. (If using an existing SQL login, enter the
appropriate value.)
DB_OWNER_PWD Password for DB_OWNER_LOGIN
SQL_ADMIN_USER SQL user with rights to create new database instances and new users.
