The goal of this specification is to extend the capabilities and utility of the CompactPCI 6U based system architecture to support the application needs of the Computer Telephony (CT) industry, by providing CompactPCI system vendors and CT board vendors with specifications that will promote multi-vendor interoperability and support the design of open, standards based components and systems. These goals include provisions for intra-system isochronous (TDM) media transport, common telephony I/O definition, reliable hot swap of CT Front Boards and peripherals, as well as agencyaware safety recommendations.

CompactPCI Computer Telephony Specification - DO NOT CLAIM CONFORMANCE Draft 3/18/98

1. Overview of CompactPCI Computer Telephony Specification
1.1. Goals
The goal of this specification is to extend the capabilities and utility of the CompactPCI
6U based system architecture to support the application needs of the Computer
Telephony (CT) industry, by providing CompactPCI system vendors and CT board
vendors with specifications that will promote multi-vendor interoperability and support
the design of open, standards based components and systems. These goals include
provisions for intra-system isochronous (TDM) media transport, common telephony
I/O definition, reliable hot swap of CT Front Boards and peripherals, as well as agency-
aware safety recommendations.
1.2. Scope
1.2.1. Extent
This is the first level of specifications containing CT industry standards for utilizing
CompactPCI's user-definable pins for the purposes of analog and digital telephony
I/O (both 2-wire and 4-wire), bussed telecom power supply distribution, and bussed
ringing distribution. Also defined are CompactPCI CT industry standard techniques
for frame grounding, sub-bus and front panel keying, geographic slot addressing
and shelf enumeration. Finally, a hot-swappable, backplane-based Time Division
Multiplex (TDM) bus, the Enterprise Computer Telephony Forum's ECTF H.110
(CT Bus)
1
, is referenced and specified as a CompactPCI CT industry standard.
1.2.2. Limitations
This specification applies primarily to 6U CT Front Boards and accommodations
which must be implemented on backplanes and in chassis to support such boards.
Some consideration for a hybrid mix of 3U and 6U CT Front Boards is included in
Appendix C; however, it is not within the scope of this specification to fully define
specifications for 3U CT Front Boards, backplanes and chassis.
Some consideration is also given for possible definitions of standard Rear I/O
Transition Boards for the purpose of telephony I/O; however, it is not within the
scope of this specification to fully define such standard boards at this time.
A stated goal of this specification is support for reliable hot swap of CT Front
Boards. Some consideration for this capability is included in this specification;
however, in the main, the requirements of the hot swap implementation of the
CompactPCI bus and the TDM bus are left to the CompactPCI Hot Swap
Specification
2
and the ECTF H.110 (CT Bus) Specification, respectively. If
discrepancies arise between this specification and either the CompactPCI Hot Swap
Specification or the ECTF H.110 (CT Bus) Specification, the latter specifications
SHALL apply.
